All timber available in our timber shop and online has been kiln-dried and is ready for making. Before kilning, our hardwoods are air-dried in stick for one to three years, allowing moisture to be released slowly and helping to maintain the stability of the timber.
As well as selling planed timber in our timber shop, we also sell kiln-dried, rough sawn hardwoods and softwoods direct from our timber stores.

Moisture Content
At Scottish Wood we aim to dry our hardwoods down to a moisture content of around 10 to 12%. This is considered an industry norm and is suitable for the making of most hardwood products and for situation in most centrally heated environments.
For the production of fine furniture and cabinetry, many woodworkers will prefer their timber at a moisture content closer to 8%. This can be achieved by allowing the wood to acclimatise in a similar environment to where the product will end up (such as a warm room), or some makers will have their own kiln for final drying and finishing.
