Decking provides an instant upgrade to your outdoor spaces, creating an inviting area for you to enjoy sunny summer days (which in Scotland – we’ve got to make the most of!).

At Scottish Wood, we supply our decking in Scottish larch – a naturally durable timber that has been used in outdoor projects for generations. Larch’s natural resistance to decay makes it a popular choice for decking, cladding and fencing.

All our Scottish larch decking is made from homegrown timber, locally processed at our sawmill.

Correctly installed homegrown larch decking should have a lifespan of 10 – 15 years plus.

Grooved decking or smooth?

Algae enjoys our damp Scottish weather, and it’s this algae that causes a deck to become slippery.

Grooved decking can reduce the slipperiness of a deck, but it can also hold the surface rainwater for longer, preventing its run-off and thereby promoting the growth of algae.

Realistically therefore, it doesn’t matter if it’s a grooved or smooth deck – you’ll still need to get out the power washer or scrubbing brush at least once or twice a tear to give it a good wash!

About Scottish Larch

Larch is a naturally durable timber, meaning it requires no special treatments or coatings before being used outdoors – making it a perfect choice for cladding, decking, and other exterior projects. Larch cladding, for example, offers a lifespan of twenty to thirty years when properly applied, and requires minimal maintenance for its upkeep.

While larch may carry a higher upfront cost than other non-durable or treated softwoods, its long lifespan and minimal upkeep can make the additional upfront cost feel incredibly worthwhile in the long run.

Freshly cut larch starts out as a warm, pinkish-orange hue. Exposure to the elements will gradually cause the colour of larch to weather to a silver-grey.

Below are some examples of the weathering and durability of untreated larch cladding on walls that are South-facing and exposed to the elements, meaning they receive high levels of weathering. None of these walls have needed any further maintenance.
