Scottish Wood is one of the only hardwood sawmills in Scotland. We specialise in Scottish grown broad-leaved trees to produce locally sourced hardwood boards and timber.
Scottish hardwoods are spectacular. They are full of natural character, making them more interesting and distinctive than most equivalent hardwood imports. With rich colours and complex patterns, Scottish hardwood timber is a joy to work with and to reveal its full and natural beauty.
Working with homegrown timber is not only much more sustainable than working with imported timbers, it also supports a long chain of local economies from the growers to the woodland owners, right through to the carpenters and the cabinet makers.

Planed or Sawn?
We sell hardwoods with two different types of finishes: planed (or dressed) and sawn.
Planed hardwoods have a smooth finish and, if you don’t have your own planer, are ideal for DIY projects such as straight or live edge shelves, windowsills or worktops.
You can find planed hardwoods in our onsite timber shop and in our online shop.
We often sell planed timber to joiners and furniture makers, though many makers their own machinery and prefer to buy sawn hardwoods to finish themselves.
Rough Sawn hardwoods are suitable for customers with their own machines and so are commonly used as timber for joinery and furniture-making.
Sawn hardwoods can be self-selected by visiting us and asking to see our sawn timber stores, or can be bought through our cut-to-order service.
Moisture Content
At Scottish Wood we aim to dry our hardwoods down to a moisture content of around 10 to 12%. This is considered an industry norm and is suitable for the making of most hardwood products and for situation in most centrally heated environments.
For the production of fine furniture and cabinetry, many woodworkers will prefer their timber at a moisture content closer to 8%. This can be achieved by allowing the wood to acclimatise in a similar environment to where the product will end up (such as a warm room), or some makers will have their own kiln for final drying and finishing.
