Quick Contact

Our timber shop stocks one of the largest selections of homegrown hardwoods in Scotland.

Whether you're looking for hardwood boards, turning blanks, burrs, waney edge shelves, or timber for a larger joinery project, you'll find a huge variety of species, sizes, and shapes to choose from.

Because our stock comes directly from our sawmilling operations, the selection changes all the time. Every visit is different, and you never quite know what interesting piece might be waiting on the shelf.

Alongside our homegrown hardwoods, we also stock Scottish Larch, Douglas Fir, wood finishes, and other essentials for your next project.

As well as hardwoods, the shop also stocks premium softwoods, larch and Douglas Fir.

History of the Scottish Wood Timber Shop

Written by Jim Birley
Jim Birley

When we started Scottish Wood it was just me and a chainsaw, doing whatever jobs made their way to us – no matter how small! As we grew, I was advised that the larger we became, the harder it would be to continue to cater to small orders from members of the public – a board or two sold as shelves, or a single piece for a worktop, etc.

But we thought that if part of our reason for being a social enterprise was to give back to the community, then we needed to make sure that community members were still able to access the services of the sawmill – however much we grew.

The inside of our first showroom

This led to the development of the original Scottish Wood showroom – a small building at the front of the yard where members of the public were welcome to visit, take whatever time they wanted selecting a board or two, and spending as much or as little money as suited them.

What started as a non-commercial decision for us turned out to have been being a very good commercial one. Over the years the timber shop has grown in popularity (and size!) – eventually leading to the building of the new shop in 2020. The shop is one of the most stand-out elements of Scottish Wood and is well worth taking some time to visit (if you haven’t already!).

What we do best – timber with character!

At Scottish Wood we specialise in homegrown hardwoods. Scottish hardwoods are full of natural character and individuality – and the level of character found in the boards we sell is one of the things that makes us stand out from the mainstream timber industry.

Live edges, natural edges, waney edges

Straight edges on timber are extremely versatile – and we sell a lot of straight edge options in our shop and online; but you can buy straight edges from loads of places! With us, you can find boards and offcuts in a huge variety of shapes: straight edge, waney edge; live edge; one of each; natural edges all around… We’ve got something of everything, and each piece is unique and full of character.

  • Everyone at Scottish Wood is always incredibly kind and helpful. I have visited many time to get roughsawn local hardwoods for furniture projects. Their quality is spectacular and they are very fair when it comes to costing their lumber. On top of that, they're a charity! I don't think they can be beat. I'm headed down to buy more wood from them today.
