History of the Scottish Wood Timber Shop

When we started Scottish Wood it was just me and a chainsaw, doing whatever jobs made their way to us – no matter how small! As we grew, I was advised that the larger we became, the harder it would be to continue to cater to small orders from members of the public – a board or two sold as shelves, or a single piece for a worktop, etc.
But we thought that if part of our reason for being a social enterprise was to give back to the community, then we needed to make sure that community members were still able to access the services of the sawmill – however much we grew.

This led to the development of the original Scottish Wood showroom – a small building at the front of the yard where members of the public were welcome to visit, take whatever time they wanted selecting a board or two, and spending as much or as little money as suited them.
What started as a non-commercial decision for us turned out to have been being a very good commercial one. Over the years the timber shop has grown in popularity (and size!) – eventually leading to the building of the new shop in 2020. The shop is one of the most stand-out elements of Scottish Wood and is well worth taking some time to visit (if you haven’t already!).
